Nick Walsh: A Passion for Racing and a Drive for Success

With a deep-rooted passion for racing and a relentless drive to succeed, Nick Walsh has quickly established himself as one of Queensland’s most exciting young trainers. From early mornings at the track as a child to winning multiple city races, Walsh’s journey in the industry is built on hard work, experience, and an unwavering love for the sport.
A Family Legacy in Racing
Racing has been a part of Nick Walsh’s life since childhood. His grandfather trained trotters, and some of his earliest memories involve early mornings at the track. While he stepped away from the industry for a time, his passion eventually led him back.
“I slowly worked my way back into the industry—riding trackwork, breaking in yearlings, and pre-training,” Walsh said. “From there, I got my licence and have been training ever since.”
A Love for Winning and the Thrill of Racing
What drives Walsh as a trainer is simple—the thrill of winning and seeing owners celebrate success.
“Racing provides some of the greatest moments people will ever experience,” he said. “I love to win, but even more so, I love seeing owners enjoy that winning feeling.”
The Value of QTIS Racing
For Walsh, racing Queensland Thoroughbred Incentive Scheme (QTIS) horses is an obvious choice.
“QTIS is a great incentive,” he said. “Being able to race for such quality prize money all over Queensland—it’s a no-brainer, really.”
Learning from the Best
Rather than looking up to just one person, Walsh believes surrounding himself with the right people has been crucial to his success.
“I don’t have a single role model, but I’ve been fortunate to be around great people,” he said. “That has played a major role in the trainer I’ve become. If you surround yourself with the right people, you will succeed.”
Race Wins and Career Highlights
Walsh has enjoyed success across Queensland, from North Queensland to Brisbane, but his standout achievement so far has been his work with Hell—a talented gelding who has won three city races.
“Winning with Hell has been a career highlight,” Walsh said. “It’s an incredible feeling to train a horse for a large ownership group and a syndication team that backs me heavily. There’s no better feeling than repaying their support with success.”
Favourite Sire: Better Than Ready
When it comes to selecting bloodlines, Walsh is a big fan of Better Than Ready.
“They have great temperaments, and his strike rate to runners is exceptional,” he said.
“If you can find a nice enough one, they will generally win races.”
Looking Ahead
With a rising reputation and a stable of talented horses, Nick Walsh Racing is making its mark. Backed by experience, passion, and a strong team, Walsh is poised to leave a lasting impact on Queensland racing—one winner at a time.
